Installing packages

*Dreamlinux comes to users with an excellent software assortment to satisfy almost every need, but it is possible that the user want to install additional applications not included in the distribution.
There are three very effective methods to install packages / applications.
One textual and two graphicals.The first is very fast and less stress on the computer, while the second is more challenging for the system, but more friendly.

Installing from command line

We start with the method using the "apt-get.". Of course will be required administrator privilegies.
Follow these steps to install an application like "Epiphany", a popular web browser not included in the normal Dreamlinux features:

  1. Run Terminal (Main Menu -> Terminal)
  2. Type in it this command:
    sudo apt-get install epiphany-browser
    to start the application identification, download, dependency resolution and installation processes. In the terminal window appear a series of messages indicate the entire process.
    It will notified the number of files to download and will be asked if you want to perform the operation.
    Just type the "Y" and press Enter to complete the procedure.
    It should be read all the messages in the terminal to identify errors.

  3. Once finished close the terminal typing:
    exit

Installing with Synaptic

Now we see how to install an application using Synaptic, the easy-to-use package manager. Just click on the icon in the Dock to access authentication window where you must enter an administrator password. Then will be shown the Synaptic window you see in the picture below.

There are different areas in Synaptic interface.

  1. Menu Bar - There are important functions for repositories reloading, for packages support, and more
  2. Tasks Bar - Where are the buttons for marking all software updates, to apply all changes, to read properties of selected software and to find packages.
  3. Sections Field - There is a long applications list classified into tasks categories. Clicking on a specific section, you get a long list of packages provided by this section
  4. Applications Field - In this area will be displaied a long list of applications. Note that on side of the package name there are symbols that indicate their current status in the system.To correctly interprete these symbols, see the figure below.

  5. Identification Field - In this area there are several buttons that indicate the packages search criteria.
  6. Information Field - This area displays information about the package once it is selected in the Applications Field.There will be described functions, dependencies, and other interesting information.

Now we see how to install a package like Exaile, a popular music player for Xfce environment.

  1. Search the package you want to install. To do so click on "Search" button

  2. In the Application Field, find the package

  3. Right-click on the white square at his side and in the context menu click on "Mark for installation".

  4. A window indicate what are the others packages and libraries that will be installed to run the program properly. This window also list any packages to update and those to be removed. It's necessary reading carefully what's listed. Once checked, click on "Mark."

  5. In the Tasks Bar click the "Apply" button to start download and install processes

  6. New window ask to confirm the imminent operation. Click on "Apply" button

  7. The download package may take few minutes depending on connection speed. A loading bar show operations.

  8. At the end of the download, begin the installation step.

  9. Once installed an additional window indicate that the package was installed. Just go to main menu and in 'Multimedia' section there is the new application Exaile

Easy Install

Easy Install is a tool provided by Dreamlinux to its users to facilitate packages download and installation. Particularly it encouraged installation of proprietary software such as applications (even closed source), drivers and codecs.
The tool has interface and usability of top level. Let see how to use it.
We will install Deluge, the Bit Torrent client for Linux.

  1. Go to Easy Install: Main Menu -> System -> Easy Install

  2. Click on the Deluge icon in the "Web Apps"
  3. In the window that appears, select "Install Deluge BitTorrent Client" (1)

  4. Click on the "Apply" button (2) and let the program download the packages and dependencies.
  5. At the end, closingEasy Install
